“But if you fail to drive out the people who live in the land, those who remain will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your side.” 33:55
I wonder what would’ve stopped them from driving out everyone in the land. Maybe some of the Caanites would be difficult or scary? They’d doubt that God would be powerful enough to help them succeed? Maybe they’d be drawn to some of them, or their lifestyle. They’d shrug and let them stick around for a while, convincing themselves that just one or two of them wouldn’t be problematic. Yet God compares them to splinters in the eye. That is definitely problematic.
Is there a temptation in your life that you know you need to completely omit? But you rationalize yourself into partially keeping it?
More often than not, a temptation and the sin attached is desirable. Maybe you need to ‘drive out’ certain company in your life. But you like them! They’re fun! Their lifestyle is attractive to you for whatever reason.
Do you doubt that God is powerful enough to overpower it, so you let it take over?
Talk this over with the Lord. Take inventory of what you have in your life and what maybe needs to be driven out, completely.
