“Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered, how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” 39:4-5
How humbling and sobering it is to remember how insignificant our lives are in the big picture.
Also. how humbling and sobering it is to remember that even though our lives are but a breath, we are each individually meaningful to God. Our life has purpose.
“Remind me that my days are numbered” prompts me to live with purpose.
“My entire lifetime is just a moment to you” reminds me that God knows the whole story, and is the author of every moment.
“You have made my life short” cautions me to be intentional, and be remember that God’s story was started before me and will go on after me. How will I respond to it within my lifetime?
It’s hard to find the line between living with purpose, and stepping out of the narcissistic tendencies I have to make the gospel all about me. Jesus, will you help me find the middle ground?
