1 Samuel 21-22 B

This story is horribly tragic. I can’t believe Saul went so far as to kill all those priests and their families. The king of Israel is officially corrupt!

Fortunately, a man who foreshadows Christ is on the rise.

The instance of David eating the bread of consecration with his men is significant. The number five, represent life and perfection of the natural order. Bread also symbolizes life. All of these point toward Christ, and Jesus calls himself “the bread of life”.

Now look at the posse David rounds up:

“Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. Now there was about four hundred men with him.” (22:2)

Jesus also attracts a rag tag bunch, and just as these nobodies later became known as David’s mighty men, Jesus has a way of making more of people by being around them.

Consider how you came to Jesus and the difference He’s made in your life. As we seek to love others as He loved us, how do we respond to the distressed, indebted and discontent?
