Here we are, wrapping up the book of Jeremiah with a few intense pages of Scripture about what’s to come for Babylon. Although God does not endorse their extreme violence, he used them to judge Israel.
“…for the Lord is a God who gives just punishment; he always repays in full.” 51:56b
Chapter 52 seem familiar? It’s restating of 2 Kings 24, giving the full report of the fall of Jerusalem. This fulfills all of Jeremiah’s warnings given in the first 24 chapters of this book.
“Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies! On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed. But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including his people, his own special possession. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name!” 51:18-19
God is no idol, and he doesn’t like sitting by, watching us replace him with them.
Take time to reflect on this book:
Have you ever felt like God has given you a message to share? Jeremiah said God’s words burned in his heart like fire, and it wore him out to keep them in (20:9). Has God put something on your heart to share? I pray that I would feel that way about the gospel. That it would exhaust me to keep it in! I would live my life to share it.
Or, has God sent someone to give you a message? Receive it well, repent and draw near to God. His anger is a slow burning wick. Although he is a patient God who slathers grace and mercy on his people, we are still called to repentance.
