“Help me understand the meaning of your commandments, and I will mediate on your wonderful deeds.”
Inevitably, when you are studying God’s word, you will come across Scripture that doesn’t make sense or is hard to swallow.
We are invited by God to ask for understanding. He’s not a harsh or prideful leader, annoyed by questions or threatened by being challenged. He is gracious with us and expectant of our hesitation.
If you come across instructions from God that rub against you the wrong way, bring it to him. It’s easy to forget that we are in a relationship with him. In any relationship, when problems arise, communication is almost always the answer.
I’m always amazed by the way God answers me when I question him. Maybe it’s months later, in a sermon I happen to be podcasting. Maybe he’ll just change my heart and I find myself postured differently towards something. Or maybe he’s quiet; leaving the gray area gray. But he’s steadfast and gentle, and I learn to trust him, needing him to explain himself less and less.
I’m so thankful to be loved by a God who makes room for my humanity. My fears, doubts, insecurities and questions are all welcomed within his amazing presence. Take advantage of that today and bring to him any questions or doubts you have about Scipture.
